If you walk along the Lough Gur lake front, past the visitor centre, you come to a closed metal gate. Scale the gate or the adjacent style, advance straight ahead, rather than left for the hill of Knockfennel, and the Farm by Lough Gur appears on your right as your elevation above the lake level increases. The farm was the home of the Catholic O’Brien family who lived there and farmed the land in the mid 19th century. The story of everyday life of the family was transcribed by Sissy O’Brien (with some assistance from family) who passed her recollections to one Mary Lady Carberry. The book was first published in 1937 in London. It was a best-seller in Dublin and also sold well in England.
The local community reprinted the book in recent times with the passing of the copyright time limit.
From the loughgur.com website:
The book ‘The Farm by Lough Gur’ written by Mary Carberry has been re-launched following much local interest. This true story is based on the life of Sissy O’Brien who lived on the farm at Lough Gur in the mid 19th century, as told to Mary Carberry. A fascinating account of ordinary domestic life in Ireland. Available at Ryans and Reardons at Holy Cross, Nagles Spar shop in Bruff and also available at the Honeyfitz theatre 087 285 2022. Price €15 per copy. Limited edition.

MB returned to his Middle East abode last night after a week long trip back home. Many snaps were snapped in the HX locality and MB has decided to share some of the best with followers over the coming days.
Bouchiers Castle
The castle sits on privately owned land next to the lake entrance, beside the farmhouse of the land owners. Given the amount of trees surrounding the structure, it is actually quite difficult to get a decent shot of it. But in the winter and spring seasons, when the trees are naked & bare, such an opportunity is granted by the Gods.
From the loughgur.com website:
The present structure is thought to date from the early 1600s during the reign of James I, but it replaced an earlier castle on the same site and some of the earlier features are incorporated into it. It is a typical tower house and there were defensive outworks and a causeway on its approach. After the plantation of Munster and the fall of the Earls of Desmond, the lands at Lough Gur were granted to Sir George Bouchier, son of the second Earl of Bath.

Muse – A subject that keeps you coming back? – Brie Anne’s photo challenge this week.
MB has taken many photos of the Stone Circle at Grange in MB’s HX homeland in Limerick, south west Ireland in recent years. He found himself back there again last week for the summer solstice, and happened to drop in on solstice eve as the sun was getting low in the sky. A few of farmer Tim Casey’s young calves were relaxing on the grass in the centre of the circle in the very impressive (photographically speaking) shadow of the tree.
The entire scene gave MB yet another interesting shot, unlike any of those he had taken in the past. The muse continues to surprise & provide.

The Summer Solstice festival in MB’s HX homeland is nigh and MB is homeward bound.
Mid next week MB will be on a plane heading to the furthermost point in western Europe and will be in the thick of the HX festival action. Lots of events to whet the appetite including: a night time lake shore planet & star gazing event organised by a local astronomy group, sunrise at the stone circle on solstice morning (circa 5am), charity solstice sunrise cycle from Limerick city to the HX lake front, the ‘long walk for a long day’ event which will involve a 3 hour walk around the hills and farm land surrounding the lake area on solstice evening, and much much more. MB is like a kid waiting for Santa!
For festival events check out the the following: http://loughgur.com/summersolstice2015/
Maybe catch up with one or two HX followers over there. All most welcome.
To give non-HX residents and new-comers to MB’s HX blog a flavour on MB’s homeland, herewith to drool over.

Morning has broken. December 2012.
“Find beauty in something broken” said Cheri in this week’s photo challenge.
The first days of any trips back to Ireland are always a special treat. The somewhat boring sandy scenery of the Middle East gives way to the ever-changing weather and incredible scenery (even in winter) of Ireland’s south west. Morning Nr. 1 for MB often involves a pre-dawn rise from sleep and a walk along ‘our’ road with camera in hand. 21 December 2012 was one such morning and had great red skies. Was photo heaven. MB took this one, and many similar, 200m from his front door on that particular morning. No enhancement. Exactly as shot.

The Roman Catholic Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (known as the Redemptorists) has operated in Limerick since 1854 and their impressive Church was completed in 1862 at the cost of GBP 17,000. The church is built in the Gothic style and is known as Mount St Alphonsus Church. It was designed by an English Architect called Thomas Hardwick, who also designed the nearby St John’s Cathedral.
