21 December 2012. Winter solstice early morning. Outside my front door, more or less. Incredible sky.

Long time follower AR contacted MB earlier this week all excited and hormonal about last weekend’s All Ireland football final. In case you don’t know lads (& Pakistani taxi driver from the Tora Bora mountains recently told MB he never heard of Ireland so who knows!) Dublin is the capital city of Ireland. And similar to when the Brits are playing against any other team – we always shout for the other team – when the Dubs are playing the entire rest of the country becomes ABDs (anyone but Dublin!).
But on account of AR being a long-time follower, and AR being a true blue Dub, MB decided to put his ABD feelings aside to make special blog post for AR, featuring pic sent by AR few days back.
Big congrats AR. And sentiments aside, it’s a cracking pic! Shukran jazilan (ta very much) as we say out these parts.

New Church (In Gaelic – Teampall Nua)
There is an old church ruin called ‘New Church’ (or ‘Teampall Nua’ in the Irish Gaelic language) back in HX, next to Lough Gur lake (check out loughgur.com).
Teampall Nua was built in 1679 and replaced an older chapel which was used by the local Earls of Desmond. It is still referred to as New Church (or by its Gaelic name) to this day. It was endowed with a chalice and patten which bear the inscription:
“The guift of the Right Honourable Rachel Countess Dowager of Bath to her chappel att Loughgur in the Kingdom of Ireland Anno Domini 1679”
The famous Irish poet/harpist Thomas O’ Connellan, who died in 1698 in nearby Bourchiers Castle, is buried here in an unmarked grave, as is Owen Bresnan (1847-1912), local poet and historian.

Evening all
MB mentioned in one of the recent Sri Lanka blogs that he would return to the missing 24 hours of his first day in SL, following the morning walk along the beach, chats with the local fishermen & breakfast. Photos below are random shots on the day from MB’s B&B, travelling in taxi to Colombo train station and others taken whilst waiting for various trains. Read on:
