Irish HX followers will be well aware, but for the many non-Irish who read MB’s blatherings from time to time, the Irish Rising of Easter weekend, 1916, was a seminal moment in Irish history. It resulted a few years later in the War of Independence which resulted in the formation of the Irish Free State in December 1921. The 100th anniversary of the rising is almost upon us and numerous events are planned in MB’s homeland in celebration and memory.
The following is an excerpt from the statement of local man James Moloney from Ballycampion, Bruff, who was involved in republican activities during that time, and later during the War of Independence, in MB’s HX locality and surrounding areas.
The family name ‘Baring’ is mentioned in the below piece. The same family came to prominence much more recently in 1995, when the family bank in Britain, of same name, collapsed, following the wild investments of infamous employee Nick Leeson. Ironically, Nick went to live in Ireland after serving some prison time, and married an Irish girl. He was, for a few years, Treasurer of Irish soccer club Galway Utd FC.
MB is intending to post some similar excerpts from the statements of Moloney and others, leading up to the Easter commorations. Read More

MB back in Dubai on visa run and little time on his hands for great compositions.
MB recently informed you all that Dubai was recently awarded the World Expo in 2020, and there was much back slapping and high fives on account. Huge pride from the residents all over Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the national flag now hangs from anything that an Emirati can get some rope around. So is partially the pic theme of today’s effort. To give you all some flavour.

Long time follower AR contacted MB earlier this week all excited and hormonal about last weekend’s All Ireland football final. In case you don’t know lads (& Pakistani taxi driver from the Tora Bora mountains recently told MB he never heard of Ireland so who knows!) Dublin is the capital city of Ireland. And similar to when the Brits are playing against any other team – we always shout for the other team – when the Dubs are playing the entire rest of the country becomes ABDs (anyone but Dublin!).
But on account of AR being a long-time follower, and AR being a true blue Dub, MB decided to put his ABD feelings aside to make special blog post for AR, featuring pic sent by AR few days back.
Big congrats AR. And sentiments aside, it’s a cracking pic! Shukran jazilan (ta very much) as we say out these parts.
