Weekly Photo Challenge – Peek

Peek.

MB’s a bit rushed on the photo challenge this evening. He has selected a shot that qualifies on two counts:

1. The crow looks like he is taking a peek at something in the distance.
2. We can see the crow’s beak – and beak rhymes with peek (you are totally hilarious MB!!!)

Weekly Photo Challenge – Rounded

Rounded.

Residents of the USA will be familiar with the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas. In Dubai, the fountains of the Dubai Mall, next to the Burj Khalifa (world’s tallest building), are similar, but bigger. The choreographed movements of the water to some great musical pieces are accompanied by flashing lights along the entire length of the Burj K. The fountains, music and light show is a spectacular sight as you dine in one of the many open-air cafes facing the fountain area, or just observe from the piazza.

This shot was taken by MB sometime in 2012 in early-evening. One must, however, see them in the darkness of night to fully appreciate the spectacle.

Weekly photo Challenge – Glow

Glow.

MB attended a Red Bull Fighters event (motorbike stunt riders) in April 2012 in the JBR area of Dubai. The artificial lighting on the night caused much ‘glow’ and MB managed to capture a little of it. MB’s camera on the night wasn’t very high tech and it struggled to a large degree in the night light, as is evident in some of the pics. Read More

Ajman is one of the Emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Friday fish market is worth a visit. The fishermen land their catches in the afternoon and the fish market traders of the adjacent market buy what they want by public auction fresh off the harbour floor.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Pedestrian

Pedestrian.

The ruins of ancient Byblos look quite pedestrian today. The history of Byblos is far from pedestrian however and is worth a read and some research if you have the time.

The below shot was taken during MB’s recent trip to Lebanon when he attended a wedding next to the ancient ruins. The shot even features three pedestrians!

Escape from the Saudi Siyara Shawshank

A few moments ago MB reblogged a post from the Saudiwoman’s Weblog. It concerns the Saudi Arabian news of the last twenty-four hours that Saudi women are now to be allowed drive cars for the first time. Just as interesting, and maybe even more so in the opinion of MB, is another angle to the story that is not getting nearly so much illumination; Read More

Change can happen in Saudi Arabia

A little ray of light from a region where it’s much required. Congrats to all who laboured hard and suffered much to get there.

(CNN) A couple of hours before the news broke that the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia was finally being lifted, rumors had circulated that a decree on a women’s issue was coming.

I suspected it could be about the driving ban, but after years of campaigning to no success, I had nearly lost hope in it ever happening.

For the past few of weeks, friends of mine have been planning parties in Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam to commemorate 27 years since the first protest against the ban. Since November 6, 1990, Saudi men and women have paid hefty prices for voicing their opposition to the ban on women driving in our country.

The unnecessary sacrifices of so many people crossed my mind as I read the tweets issued by the Saudi Press Agency announcing that the ban had been lifted.

The manner in which the ban was lifted…
