It’s The Weekend

The Holy Trinity Abbey Church, Adare, County Limerick, Ireland

The Holy Trinity Church in Adare is some 800 years old and has a very interesting history.

Obviously, MB, if it’s that old!!!

Ok lads, enough smart-ass comments for one post. Please.

It was the only branch of the Trinitarian Order in Ireland, founded near Paris in the year of our Lord 1193, with the approval of Pope Innocent III in 1198, whom MB had never previously heard of until he researched this post.

Anyway, and interestingly, the purpose of the Trinitarian Order was to gain the release of captured Christians, who were the victims of pirate raids around the Mediterranian coastline at that time or of Muslim armies during the Crusader wars. The full and more correct name of the Order is The Order of Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives. The Order continues to this day, working amongst oppressed communities in particular.

  1. What a charming and fascinating post. I’d never heard of this order — and when 410 of the 585 members are priests, it’s easy to see why. But what a beautiful little outpost they built for themselves in Ireland! And what a noble mission they once had too, to save those in captivity. You’ve taught me quite a lot today, MB. Thank you for that.

    • Thank you, Michael. I found the Trinitarian Church fascinating. I have often passed it but never knew all this about it. I am over my big surgery on the knee. Recovery is slow but thank God it is over.

      Regards and thanks
